Zoho's Arattai app has launched features that even WhatsApp hasn't yet offered in 2025. This app is made in India and is becoming a strong alternative to WhatsApp. Zoho Corporation has updated the Arattai messaging app, including an Android TV version.
This dedicated app is available for download from the Play Store. WhatsApp hasn't yet launched a version for smart TVs, making messaging and calling on larger screens difficult for users.
Arattai's Special Features
The name 'Arattai' comes from a Tamil word meaning 'casual chat.' The app was launched in 2021 but has only recently gained popularity. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has promoted it. He said on X that Arattai is safe, user-friendly, and completely free.
This is a Made in India initiative, available for download on Android and iOS. The app aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to promote indigenous products. Sign-ups increased from 3,000 to 350,000 after launch, representing a 100-fold growth. Arvind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity, and Radhika Gupta of Edelweiss Mutual Fund congratulated Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu.
Advantages of Multi-Device Support
Arattai offers WhatsApp-like features, such as text messages, voice notes, media sharing, and audio-video calls. Group chats can accommodate up to 1,000 people. There are also Stories and Channels, where updates can be shared or creators can be followed. Importantly, it offers multi-device support, including Windows, macOS, Linux, and now Android TV. WhatsApp's lack of TV support gives Arattai an edge.
Group calls are easier to conduct on larger screens. Zoho emphasizes privacy. Chats are encrypted in transit, and user data is not shared with advertisers or third parties. The app is ad-free, providing a clean user experience.
Flaws to be addressed in the Made-in-India app
But there are some drawbacks. End-to-end encryption isn't the default for text chats, as is the case with WhatsApp. It is available for calls, but not for messages, which may be a concern for privacy-conscious users. Zoho says it will run smoothly even on low-end phones and slow internet. It will be suitable for rural and semi-urban areas where low bandwidth is required. After launch, server load caused some issues, such as delayed OTPs and slow contact sync. Zoho is fixing these.
Arattai is challenging WhatsApp, but it's difficult to completely replace it. WhatsApp has 500 million Indian users. If Zoho fills the encryption gap and strengthens its infrastructure, it will become the next big thing. This Made-in-India app could give digital communication a new dimension. Rural users will find it easier to stay connected. Overall, Arattai's new feature is a step up from WhatsApp.
