Eggs are a staple food in many people's food shops, ideal for eating on their own, in salads or for baking. The question of how to store certain foods, including eggs, is controversial, with some people opting for the fridge and others preferring to store them at room temperature. In America, eggs undergo washing and sanitisation, which removes their natural protective coating, meaning they need to be kept in the fridge.
However, this isn't the case for eggs packaged in the UK, yet many Brits still opt to keep their eggs refrigerated. According to Tesco Real Food, this could be because they tend to last longer, but only when placed in a certain location.
The experts said: "Eggs last longer at the back of the fridge (not in the door), and the shells are porous, so store them in their boxes away from strong-smelling food.
"They cook better at room temperature, so if a recipe calls for room-temperature eggs, don't ignore it; let them come to room temperature by keeping them out of the fridge for 30 minutes before using.
"Room-temperature eggs will be more voluminous when whisked, so they work better in chiffon cakes."
Some fridges have certain egg baskets in the doors, but this exposes them to warmer temperatures when the fridge door is opened.
If you're not sure whether your eggs are still fresh, simply put them in water. The experts say they will drop to the bottom and stay there if they are fresh, and float if they are old. If they float, throw them away.
"If you don't have time to use them, you can freeze eggs before their best-before date, but not in their shells.
"To freeze whole eggs or egg whites, beat them first. Remember to label the container with how many eggs are in there.
"If freezing yolks, add half a tablespoon of salt or one and a half tablespoons of sugar per 240ml of egg to help stop the yolks from gelling.
"Defrost thoroughly in the fridge before using. Both whites and yolks can be frozen for up to three months."
Other items that should be stored in the fridge but are commonly purchased outside the fridge are condiments, including ketchup.
Once opened, it's recommended to store the bottle in the fridge in order to reduce the risk of bacteria and mould forming.
