Former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny was left gasping for oxygen after being floored by Curtis Davies in a charity boxing match. The pair, both football veterans, squared off on Saturday, with ex-Derby County defender Davies dominating the bout from the start.

A flurry of punches from Davies led referee Wayne Alexander to enforce a standing eight-count.

Despite the onslaught, 47-year-old Kenny bravely soldiered on, only to be sent sprawling to the canvas by a powerful right hand from Davies. Kenny, who boasts over 700 appearances in his football career, attempted to rise but Alexander decided to end the fight there.

Following the brutal stoppage, Kenny required oxygen while Davies celebrated his victory.

Reflecting on his triumph, 40-year-old Davies said: "The game plan was to stick to the jab and try and keep him at range because he's a shorter guy than me, probably not as quick on his feet as me but he's a big, powerful guy. I wanted to be the one to get the first shot and if I'm honest the first shot took his soul.

"First shot I caught him with my right hand took his soul and when I knew it was over. It should have been stopped a good 30 seconds before it was.

"Really pleased, I've worked hard for this, it's bittersweet, I love Paddy to bits, I didn't want to have to knock him about but that's what we're here to do. It's all for charity, yes, but I enjoyed that win."

Davies, who boasts over 650 appearances in his club career, has now challenged YouTube star turned boxer Jake Paul and the celebrity boxing scene, Misfits. He boldly declared: "Misfits and Jake Paul, whoever wants it!".

The event was organised by Stake with the goal of raising £500,000 for four charities. All proceeds were donated to Playskill, Sport In Mind, Willow Foundation, and Helping Hands.

In other bouts, former Reading striker Leroy Lita triumphed over David Noble, while ex-Tottenham midfielder David Bentley was defeated by Chelsea coach Jody Morris
