Sausages are perfect when you're craving something hearty for breakfast, but they can often turn out heavy or even bland if you just throw them in a frying pan without much thought. Many people actually add seasoning to store-bought sausages before cooking them to help bring out the flavour and help cut through the fattiness.
Julie Clark, a recipe developer with 35 years of experience and founder of the Tastes of Lizzy T, says a simple yet traditional way to make sausages tastier is to use fennel seeds. She said: "Italian sausage has many herbs and spices, but fennel seed is what gives it its distinct flavour. Don't skip it. I buy whole fennel seed and crush it slightly when making this seasoning mix."

It might sound a little strange if you have never tried it before, but fennel seeds are a classic ingredient in Italian cooking to make pork more appetising.
When fennel seeds are toasted they add more warmth and sweetness to a recipe, which compliments fatty meats like pork to bring out the taste.
However, fennel seeds are also known to help with digestion, and can make a heavy breakfast like sausages a lot easier on your stomach.
Taking the time to season sausages is straightforward but will make your breakfast fry up a lot more flavourful, or even make classic dinners like sausages and mash more interesting.
How to season sausagesYou will need:
- Half a teaspoon of fennel seeds
- Half a teaspoon of paprika
- Two teaspoons of dried parsley
- Two teaspoons of Italian seasoning
- One teaspoon of red pepper flakes
- One and a half teaspoons of black pepper
- One tablespoon of minced garlic
- One teaspoon of minced onion
Method:
All you need is a small bowl, and then pour in all the seasoning. Mix everything together with a teaspoon and then sprinkle on your sausages.
You can add your seasoning to store-bought sausages if you wish, but if you want to make your sausages from scratch, you will also need two pounds of ground pork.
If making homemade sausages, simply add the seasoning to the pork, shape into patties, and then cook in a large frying pan.
Sausage seasoning is easy to throw together, and just a little effort will turn your breakfast into something seriously mouthwatering
If you wish to store the seasoning, then place in a airtight container but for long-term usage make sure to use dried onion and garlic seasoning instead of fresh minced vegetables.
