In cricket, catches are often said to win matches. A single chance can shift momentum, build pressure or even decide the fate of a game. When those chances are missed, the consequences are felt not just in the scorecard but in the spirit of the team. That truth was on full display when India repeatedly let Bangladesh opener Saif Hassan off the hook in their crucial Super-Four contest at the Asia Cup 2025 in Dubai.
Saif Hassan was dropped not once or twice but four times, the most by India against a single batter in T20 internationals. It began in the 16th over when Shivam Dube spilled what looked like the simplest of catches at deep mid-wicket. He appeared well-placed to take it but, with Hardik Pandya charging toward the same ball, seemed distracted and ended up fumbling.
Soon after, Varun Chakaravarthy’s clever looped delivery drew a top edge, giving Sanju Samson a straightforward chance. The wicketkeeper ran in, called for it, but badly misjudged the flight and ended up diving short of the ball. In the very next over, Saif Hassan slog-swept Kuldeep Yadav to deep fine leg where Abhishek Sharma too erred, arriving late and letting the ball slip through his fingers. Earlier in the 12th over, Axar Patel also missed a tough caught-and-bowled opportunity.
Despite India’s generosity, the night did not belong to Saif Hassan. He eventually fell for a gritty 69 off 51 balls, dismissed by Patel with a sharp catch at long-on in the 18th over. Bangladesh’s chase crumbled thereafter, as India sealed a 41-run win.
For India, the victory brought relief but the dropped chances once again highlighted a fielding weakness that has haunted them throughout the tournament, a reminder that no matter the batting or bowling strength, matches can still slip through careless hands.
