Earthquake strikes Russia: 6.1 magnitude tremor jolts Kurli Islands; comes days after 8.8 Kamchatka quake

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Kuril Islands on Saturday, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported. The tremor occurred at 19:33:54 IST at a depth of 10 km, with its epicentre located at latitude 49.94°N and longitude 162.70°E.

NCS posted the details of earthquake in a post on X.


The quake comes just days after a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula triggered large tsunami waves along the coastlines of Japan and Russia.

On August 5, the region also experienced a 5.1 magnitude tremor near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in Russia’s far east, according to the US Geological Survey . That quake, centred 144 km southeast of Kamchatsky at a depth of 25 km.
