NEW DELHI: Vice President JD Vance used his tribute to slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk to make a surprising personal pledge, to be kinder to his wife, Usha, Daily Beast reported.
Speaking while guest-hosting The Charlie Kirk Show on Monday, Vance, 41, recalled a conversation with Kirk’s widow, Erika, after the 30-year-old firebrand was gunned down on Sept. 10 at Utah Valley University.
“Erika told me Charlie never raised his voice, never cussed at her, never was mean-spirited,” Vance said. “I can never say that I’ve never raised my voice to my wife. Like most husbands, even the good ones, we’re sometimes imperfect.”
Vance, who met Usha at Yale Law School after a difficult upbringing he chronicled in Hillbilly Elegy, promised to emulate Kirk’s example. “Maybe the best way that I can contribute, and the best way that I could honor my dear friend, is to be the best husband that I can be, to be the kind of husband to my wife that he was to his,” he said.
The Ohio Republican also extended that pledge to his three children, noting fondly their family trip to the Taj Mahal in April.
But the moment of personal reflection soon gave way to politics. Vance linked Kirk’s killing to what he called “left-wing extremism,” vowing to “dismantle” it and ensure “the killer is brought to justice.”
Authorities have charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with Kirk’s murder. Robinson, who reportedly confessed to friends online, is expected to face formal charges in court on Tuesday.
